I recently published an article on LinkedIn with the title “Strategy in an Age of Radical Uncertainty,” as a provication for an in-person Salon Event in May, being run by Aperture Strategy with the support of the Enlightened Enterprise Academy. That will be one of a seires of highly interactive small group executive retreats. And the leading British economist, educationalist, and author Sir John Kay will be the guest speaker during the dinner.
John co-authored Radical Uncertainty: Decision-Making for an Unknowable Future (2020).
Attendance at the in-person retreat is by invitation or application only. EMAIL FOR DETAILS
The Event is taking place at Cerney House and Gardens in the Cotswolds.
The house is 90mins door-ro-door from London Paddington station. It is also within easy reach of Heathrow and Gatwick airports, plus major roads: M4, M5, and M40/A40.
THE ONLINE SALON SERIES TO FOLLOW
Strategy in an Age of Radical Uncertainty will also be the title of a new online Salon series, this one being offered in partnership with Aperture Strategy.
The series will feature a pre-recorded interviews with leading thinkers. Each will be followed by a live online dialogues with the person that has been interviewed, additional guests and a live audience. The sessions will be interactive and include moderated Q&As.
The series is supported by this Salon Magazine. Those with Free Subscriptions will have access to recorded extracts. Those with Paid subsscriptions ($8 per month or $80 per year) will be invited to attend the live events and get access to full recordings. And those with Membership of the Enlightened Enterprise Academy will get free access to this and every other online salon series.
DEVELOPMENT OF THE ONLINE SERIES
An interview with Henry Mintzberg has already been pre-recorded. Highlights will be available soon.
Henry famously critiqued strategic planning is his book The Rise and Fall of Strategic Planning (1994), and advcated what came to be known as Emergent Strategy.
He was also a co-author of Strategy Safari, probably the best selling management book of all time.
An interview with John Kay will be recorded this week and highlights will be available soon.
THE LAUNCH EVENT FOR THE ONLINE SERIES
The Enlightened Enterprise Academy, in partnership with Aperture Strategy, are aiming to launch the series in June, and will announce the date as soon as possible. The special first event will bring John Kay and Henry Mintzberg together with other guests, to explore the themes that will then get explored in much greater detail in the series that follows.
As stated above, Henry is one of the biggest names in strategy as a management discipline, whilst John co-authored the book Radical Uncertainty. This will therefore be a very important and authoritative ‘marriage’ of the two main themes in the series. The other guests, including a representative of Aperture Strategy, with add an essential extra dimension to the conversation.
The additional dimension is strategic thinking and practice, a possible means of addressing the failings of tratditional approaches to strategy, a discipline with a pretty dismal track record.
In the soon to be released recorded interview, Henry states of strategy, “the field is getting more diffuse to the point where it doesn't know what it is.” And he doesn’t see the field as clear or very cohesive at this point in time. Strategic thinking and practice could help address these issue.
